Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of ministry will I participate in over the course of the trip?
Go Near Ministry (GNM) mission trips are an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ through the sharing of the gospel and meeting practical needs in a variety of settings. Teams deliver requested school supplies, equipment, clothing and Bibles to distribute to our Kenyan partners. We bring help and hope by serving in Kenyan schools, churches, orphanages, prisons and a women’s vocational training program.
Do I need previous experience?
No previous experience serving overseas is required for our short-term mission trips. GNM trips are a wonderful experience for first-time travelers overseas. Volunteers are given opportunities to try new areas of service (teaching, evangelism, sports, coaching and child care) with positive and supportive coaching by trip leaders. For extended- term mission trips, previous experience serving overseas is required.
What are age requirements/restrictions?
GNM trips are multi-generational. High school and college students, single adults and families all have unique and valuable contributions on a GNM team. Younger students often travel with their parents to share a mission trip together.
How much does it cost?
The estimated costs for a GNM mission trip to Kenya is approximately $3,000. The cost will vary dependent upon factors such as length of stay and price of tickets. Trip length varies from 10 days (short-term) to 3 weeks (extended-term)
What does the cost of the trip cover?
The estimated cost includes visas, flights, housing, meals, programming costs and transportation in the country.
How do I raise the funds necessary for the trip?
Go Near Ministry is a registered 501c3 nonprofit. Your trip can be self-funded or the cost of the trip can be raised by asking individuals or organizations to join your support team. Supporters will receive a tax-deduction report from Go Near Ministry for their contribution. We also provide training and coaching on raising funds for mission trips.
Do I make my own travel arrangements?
No. GNM handles all travel arrangement and Visa requirements. Travelers will be required to obtain passports prior to booking flights.
Where do I stay in Kenya? What are my accommodations like?
We stay the majority of our time at Pan African Christian University (PACU) located in Nairobi. We enjoy the safety of staying within a Christian university compound with electricity and internet access. Our teams are served delicious meals.
Team members may also travel to Namelok. We stay at a lodge that has excellent accommodations while we serve in our partnering Maasai school and community.
What if health needs or medical emergencies occur on a GNM trip?
GNM team members have access to quality medical services in clinics, hospitals and pharmacies in Nairobi if needed.
We also require team members to obtain travel insurance for the duration of their travel.
Does my trip require immunizations?
Yes, immunization information can be obtained by contacting Lorri Harper [email protected]. Please consult your physician for your specific needs.
Will I receive any training?
GNM will provide training on the spiritual and practical aspects of serving in Africa. Practical aspects include: immunizations, what to pack, dietary restrictions and how to respond appropriately in Kenyan culture. Spiritual aspects include: biblical teaching on serving the poor, sharing the gospel, growing in discipleship and love for others and identification of spiritual gifts.
What language do they speak in Kenya?
The two official languages in Kenya are English and Swahili. Most students and adults we interact with speak English.
What safety precautions do you take?
GNM maintains established relationship with other missions and nonprofit organizations along with GNM staff that live in Kenya for informed decisions before and during our stay. Our teams are registered with the U. S. State Department during travel and duration of stay.
