Telling the story of Jonah

It was a rare treat for me to have an experienced teacher join us at Uzimatele. Cheryl Williams was eager to read to the children and did a marvelous job engaging the children with the help of Jackie, pastor George’s wife who interpreted in Swahili. Cheryl read the story of Jonah with a borrowed book from my church back home. I felt I had a twin as she read with much excitement and animation. The story was then reinforced by enacting a play that retold the story. I smile when I remember that time of expanding our children’s world through story and imaginative play.

Cheryl Williams is my kind of teacher. I love her enthusiasm and passion for teaching children.

Take a close look at the faces of these children as they listen to the story of Jonah.

Jonah was told to go over to Ninevah.  He didn’t obey, but ran away

and the play follows the story….

Melody directs the play. Jackie interprets and our Jonah is selected. Allyson and Victoria prepare to be the big fish that swallows Jonah.

Melody shows Jonah how to run away from God’s command to go to Ninevah.

OH NO!! The storm arises and Jonah’s boat is shaking!!

Allyson and Victoria are the big fish that swallows Jonah

Who is having the most fun?

Jonah is spit out of the big fish on to dry land

Jonah is instructed to go to Ninevah to tell the people there (the cluster of teachers)  to repent.

What about you?  Has God called you to go?
